Event Details:
Join us on September 14, 2024 for a field trip to the original sawdust burner that inspired Burner Herzog, an exhibit by local artists Gary Blundell and Victoria Ward, now on display at the Agnes Jamieson Gallery until November 23.
Near Gary and Victoria’s log home is an abandoned sawdust burner, the last one believed to be still standing in Ontario. This abandoned burner is a ‘vestigial’ implement that the logging industry used regularly to incinerate the sawdust made from processing cut trees. Gary and Victoria work towards illuminating the idea that industry and landscape are intertwined. These types of abandoned structures have long been a major subject matter of their artwork.
Our field trip will start at the Agnes Jamieson Gallery at 10 am for a tour of the exhibit with the artists. At 11 am we will individually drive to the Burner site (near Harcourt at the east border of Algonquin Park). Gary and Victoria will lead a hike to the Burner, followed by a hike to High Falls. A permit from Algonquin Park is required to hike to High Falls.
Everyone is welcome. Admission is by donation. Pre-registration is required. Please email culturalcentre@mindenhills.ca or call 705-286-3763 x 542 to register.
